Last week, Clay Central/Everly Elementary participated in Read Across America Day 2021. Students discovered truth in Dr. Seuss' literature such as, "You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book."

During the month of February, CC/E PK-6 grade students logged all books read at home and at school. For every book completed the students put a heart on the reading wall next to their name and the name of the book read.

CC/E librarian Pati Lindsey placed 40 Seuss bookmarks randomly inside books in the library. After a bookmark was found, the student read the book and then was asked to summarize the book for Ms. Lindsey. Students received a prize for their efforts and enjoyed hunting for the coveted Seuss bookmarks.

The CC/E library also sponsored a Seuss gumball contest for each grade, calling on students to guess the number of Seuss gumballs in the jar. Winners of the gumball contest were announced March 2 during the Dr. Seuss Birthday party celebration. Mrs. MaryAnn Jobst and Ms. Lindsey combined forces to bring the party to life alongside fellow staff. The birthday party allowed students to celebrate their reading efforts while enjoying a virtual game of Zoom bingo, highlighted with treats and prizes.

Read Across America was launched in 1998 by the National Educational Association as a way to encourage children to read. CC/E's goal was to get their students excited about books, give them opportunities to share their experiences with stories and to help them to realize that "the more that you read, the more things you will know; the more that you learn, the more places you'll go!"

CC/E encourages all of their families to continue reading daily with their children.
