H-M-S sophomore Lance Berends named to 1A substate team

A Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn player has been named to an all-substate team by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association.

Lance Berends is one of eight players, including five from the War Eagle Conference, to be named to the Class 1A all-Substate 1 team. The sophomore led H-M-S in scoring, rebounds and blocks during the 2020-21 season.

Other players named to the team were: Keaton Bonderson, 10, and Carter DeRocher, 11, Gehlen Catholic; Dallas Kluender, 11, Woodbury Central; Carter Sievers, 10, Newell-Fonda; Garrett Trapp, 12, River Valley; Jaxon Bunkers, 10, Remsen St. Mary’s; and Jake Wallin, 10, South O’Brien.

Mike Langel, of Gehlen Catholic, was named the Substate 1 coach of the year. The Jays won the War Eagle Conference boys’ basketball title this season.

Noah Strantz earns all-Siouxland wrestling team recognition


One Okoboji/H-M-S wrestler has been named to the 2020-21 all-Siouxland Conference wrestling team.

Sophomore Noah Strantz is among those included on the second team. The 152-pounder was runner-up at the conference meet in January.
