Elise Haack launches a three-point attempt in the H-M-S girls' game with South O'Brien on Jan. 26.

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team failed to generate much offense in three losses last week.

After struggling to get shots to fall early in the game, H-M-S made a run at South O'Brien in the second half before falling short, 55-44, on Jan. 26 in Hartley.

Twenty-two percent field goal shooting hampered the offense, especially early in the game when the Hawks trailed 12-5 after one quarter and by 14 points late in the first half.

A 10-0 run in the third quarter pulled H-M-S to within 31-30. South O'Brien edged back to a four-point lead to start the final period and increased it to 42-33. The Hawks' final rally got them to within seven before four Wolverine free throws settled the outcome.

The fourth-quarter comeback was hurt by 7-of-18 shooting at the foul line.

Jasmine Lux topped the scoring with 17 points while Lydia Harders scored 11, Darby Mastbergen scored six, Taya Mason scored five and Olivia Grooters added four.

Grooters grabbed 12 rebounds and two steals; Lux had nine rebounds; Harders had seven; Mayson had six and Elise Haack finished with five.

Hannah Dau and Kaylee Jacobs led South O'Brien (6-10) with 17 and 13 points.

• vs. Boyden-Hull

The first half was a long one for H-M-S in a 57-16 loss at Boyden-Hull on Jan. 28.

The Hawks fell behind 18-2 in the first quarter and failed to score again. The Comets added 20 points in the second quarter to build a 38-2 lead. The second half was more competitive but Boyden-Hull continued to pull away.

Harders scored six points, Grooters and Mason each scored four and Emily Mutombo scored two. The Hawks made 8-of-36 attempts (22 percent) from the field and missed their two free throw attempts. They also committed 31 turnovers.

The Comets (9-8) made nearly 50 percent of their attempts from the floor but were just 12-of-27 at the foul line. Leading scorers were Lydia Grond with 15 points and Marissa Pottebaum and Leah Rozeboom with 13 each.

• vs. Unity Christian

Another scoreless quarter limited H-M-S's offensive output during a 63-20 loss to Unity Christian, on Jan. 29 at Orange City.

The Knights ran out to a 26-6 lead. Although their offensive output was half what it was in the first quarter, they still extended the advantage to 39-10 at half time.

The Hawks scored as many points in the third quarter as they did the entire first half, but were then held scoreless in the final period.

Scoring for H-M-S included seven points by Mason, five by Harders, four by Emily Otto and two each by Grooters and Lux. The Hawks were 8-of-33 from the floor and 2-of-4 at the line. They committed 32 turnovers.

Grabbing three rebounds each were Grooters, Lux, Mutombo and Otto. Harders added four steals.

Unity Christian (15-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Gracie Schoonhoven with 14 points.

H-M-S (4-13, 2-6) closes out the regular season at Sibley-Ocheyedan on Feb. 4, at home against Akron-Westfield on Feb. 5 and at Harris-Lake Park on Feb. 9.
