11th Annual Family Fest canceled

The Clay County Fair & Events Center announced last week that the 2021 edition of Family Fest, originally scheduled for March 6, has been canceled.

“We feel with the current COVID-19 mitigation measures that are in place, we would not be able to put on the same quality of event that everyone deserves and expects, and do so in a safe and responsible way,” the Family Fest organizing committee stated in a news release. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Family Fest in 2022.”

Next year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2022.

Virtual nature conservation book club at library

O’Brien County Conservation Board and the Hartley Public Library are offering a bi-monthly virtual book club that will focus on nature and conservation.

A variety of books, both non-fiction and fiction, have been chosen to discuss in a virtual platform from the comfort of your own home. This book club will meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Discussion questions will help lead the conversation.

Feb. 9 will mark the first virtual meeting and the monthly book pick is “Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale” by Adam Minter. To register and for more information, please visit prairieheritagecenter.org.

Women Managing Horses program offered at Spencer

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Clay County will host the four-session Women Managing Horses program beginning Thursday, Feb. 18 and continuing Feb. 25, March 4 and March 11, from 6 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. The program will also offer a virtual attendance option for those who prefer to attend from their home.

The USDA 2017 Census of Agriculture reported nearly 55,000 horses, ponies, mules and donkeys on more than 9,000 farms in Iowa. Total sales of equine in Iowa amounted to $19.7 million, ranking Iowa 11th in the nation. As horse owners and business managers, women make important decisions about the equine in their care. The Women Managing Horses program provides a unique opportunity to learn in a relaxed, fun environment.

According to Amy Forrette, Extension Ag Program Coordinator, social distancing will be maintained, as well as masks encouraged. However, if you are interested in taking the program but hesitant to attend in-person or live a long distance away, Forrette is also offering the program virtually. Individuals can specify at registration how they plan to attend.

Women Managing Horses is led by ISU Associate Professor and Equine Extension Specialist Peggy Auwerda. Sessions will cover financial documentation and breakeven analysis, equine insurance, annual horse health care plans, evaluation of feed rations, marketing your equine business, environmental management and land use decisions.

Register online at http://www.aep.iastate.edu/womeninag/2021/spencer.html or by contacting Forrette at (712) 262-2264 or forrette@iastate.edu. Registration deadline is Feb. 11. Cost for the program is $75 which includes an evening meal for those who attend the program in-person.
