• Vehicle struck from behind

Whiteout conditions contributed to an accident that occurred on Dec. 23 at 1:35 p.m.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2021 Hyundai driven by Jeri Wescott, 61, of Hartley, was stopped in the 1200 mile of Highway 18 due to whiteout conditions. Her vehicle was struck from behind by a 2018 Toyota driven by Luis Martin Cota, 43, of Sibley.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the Hyundai, owned by Kirk Wescott, was estimated at $5,000 and damage to the Toyota, owned by Dethmers Manufacturing, was listed at $7,000.

• Collide head-on in blizzard

Two vehicles collided head-on on Highway 71 on Dec. 23 at 2:46 p.m.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, a 2017 Dodge Ram driven by Larry Ash, 25, of Emmetsburg, was northbound in the 4200 mile of Highway 71, and a 2001 Dodge Dakota driven by Thomas Gross, 63, of Greenville, was southbound in the same area. Due to blizzard conditions and zero visibility, the vehicles collided head-on, causing heavy front end damage to both vehicles.


No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $3,000 for each vehicle.

• Vehicles sustain disabling damage

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred near a rural intersection on Dec. 23 at 12:49 p.m.

The report stated that Darla Sheasley, 57, of Everly, was traveling west near the intersection of 120th Avenue and 300th Street when she stopped due to weather conditions and zero visibility. Also traveling west near the same intersection was Dustin Meyers, 33, of Spencer. His 2003 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 collided with the rear of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator driven by Sheasley, causing it to enter the ditch.


The report did not list any injuries. Both vehicles sustained disabling damage estimated at $2,500 for the Silverado and $2,000 for the Jeep.

• Loses control on snow

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated a single vehicle accident that occurred on Dec. 27 at 9:50 a.m.

The report stated that Sebastian Morales Buchan, 29, of Sibley, was traveling north as he was entering Highway 60. He lost control of the 2002 Ford S10 on the snow. It entered the ditch and rolled on its side.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Morales Buchan was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and No Valid Driver’s License.
