Remsen St. Mary's was not in a giving mood during their visit to Hartley on Dec. 18, as they swept Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a War Eagle Conference basketball doubleheader.

In the girls' game, turnovers hampered a good night offensively for H-M-S during a 75-53 loss. The maroon Hawks turned the ball over 36 times, 26 of which were the result of steals by St. Mary's.

H-M-S overcame a nine-point deficit to pull to within 22-20 early in the second quarter but St. Mary's scored 14 straight points and would eventually hold a 41-28 half time lead.

Trailing by 19 points in the third quarter, H-M-S pulled to within 10. But St. Mary's scored off consecutive steals to regain the momentum and were not threatened again.

Olivia Grooters and Taya Mason both scored 14 points, Darby Mastbergen scored nine, Lydia Harders scored five and Emily Otto added four. H-M-S made 45.8 percent of its shots from the floor and was 5-of-10 at the free throw line.

Otto grabbed 10 rebounds, Grooters and Harders each had four and Mastbergen finished with three. Harders also had two steals.

St. Mary's had six players score in double figures.

H-M-S fell to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in War Eagle Conference action.

Darby Mastbergen takes a shot in the first half of H-M-S's game with Remsen St. Mary's. She scored nine points in the 75-53 loss.

H-M-S narrowed the margin to 13 points at the end of the third quarter but was trailing by 20 with just over three minutes to play. A strong finish narrowed the deficit to 10 points, but H-M-S could not get closer.
