America has changed over the years in the celebration of Christmas. More Americans probably know the story of Santa Claus than know why Christians celebrate Christmas. Gifts, evergreen trees and outdoor lights seem to be more important than the true meaning behind Christmas.

Very rarely will any county courthouse in America dare to put up a nativity scene featuring Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus. Many county governments fear being sued for putting up a nativity scene. The state capitol building in South Dakota may be one of the few state capitol buildings in the country that regularly displays a nativity scene inside the building along with the yearly display of Christmas trees.

About 800 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah, the prophet of the Old Testament predicted, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end" (Isaiah 9:6-7a). Isaiah wrote about one of the greatest days in the history of human beings. He wrote about the incarnation – the time when the Son of God took on human flesh and blood for our benefit. He wrote of the One who was conceived by the Holy Spirit of God. He wrote of the son of the Virgin Mary. Christians know that special child better by the name of Jesus. The child was named Jesus because He would save His people from their sins.

Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who is worshiped and adored by millions around the world. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who came to our world on a mission of mercy, grace and peace. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who lived a perfect and sinless life for us. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who was obedient to Mary and his stepfather Joseph and his Father in heaven. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who gave his life as a once-for-all sacrifice for the sins of the entire world. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who rose to new life on the third day after He was placed in a tomb. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who wants everyone to repent and believe in His saving name. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who gives people a peace that the world cannot give us. Jesus is the Christ of Christmas who gives us peace with the one true God.

For this Covid Christmas, think about these words: Christ Overcomes Viruses and sins In His Death and Resurrection for us.
