Turnovers hamper Hawk girls against Sioux Central

H-M-S loses season opener to Rebels, 65-41

The turnover total for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn exceeded its point production in the girls' basketball season-opener on Nov. 24 in Hartley. The Hawks committed 44 turnovers in their 65-41 loss to Sioux Central.

The Rebels led 15-3 at the end of the first quarter and extended the margin to as many as 21 points late in the first half. Their pressing defense harassed the Hawks throughout the game, leading to 29 steals.

In the third quarter, Sioux Central converted several offensive rebounds into baskets to extend the advantage to 55-25. The Hawks did outscore the Rebels by six points in the final period.

Taya Mason led H-M-S with 16 points, Lydia Harders and Jasmine Lux each scored seven, Emily Mutombo scored six and Olivia Grooters added four. The Hawks shot 30.2 percent from the field and were 14-of-27 at the foul line.

Rebounding leaders were Grooters with eight, Harders with seven, Lux with six and Elise Haack and Darby Mastbergen with four each. Grooters and Mastbergen added two steals.


Sioux Central's leading scorers were Taylor Krager with 20 points, Berkley Johannsen with 19 and Jenna Jessen with 10.

H-M-S returns to action on Dec. 8 with a home girl/boy doubleheader with Trinity Christian.
