• Fails to negotiate change of road direction

Two persons were taken to an area hospital following an accident on L36/Nettle Avenue on Nov. 5 at 10 p.m.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Samantha Anne Orban, 19, of LeMars, was northbound on Highway 143 and failed to stop at the Highway 10 intersection because she did not know a stop sign was there. Orban crossed Highway 10 onto Nettle Avenue, which jogs slightly to the west. As she did so, the passenger side wheels of her 2008 Ford Focus went on the gravel shoulder. Orban attempted to correct the vehicle and lost control. It entered the west ditch and rolled.

Orban and Tatiana Suni Ah Chong, 16, of Marcus, were transported by Paullina Ambulance to Orange City Area Health System for treatment of possible injuries. Damage to the Focus was estimated at $6,000 and damage to two road signs owned by O’Brien County was listed at $200.

Orban was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

• Loses control on gravel road

Several citations were issued following an accident on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Jeanne Lynn Hyatt, 59, of Council Bluffs, was northbound in the 4100 mile of Redwood Avenue when she lost control of her 1996 Ford Explorer on gravel. The vehicle entered the east ditch, rolled onto the driver’s side and came to rest.

Hyatt and a passenger, Daniel Vander Pool, 59, of Paullina, reported possible injuries but were not transported. Damage to the Explorer was listed at $716. The report stated that the vehicle did not have the issued registration plates attached.

Hyatt was cited for Failure to Maintain Control, Operation without Registration Plate, No Proof of Insurance and Driving while License Suspended.

• Driver charged with OWI

A Sanborn man escaped injury when his vehicle entered the ditch on Nov. 10 at 11:45 p.m.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office report states that Raoul Alexander Faulkner, 49, was traveling too fast for conditions on Highway 18/320th Street, west of Redwing Avenue, and lost control of his 2002 Chrysler 300M. The vehicle crossed the centerline and entered the south ditch.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,000. Faulkner was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and OWI-1st Offense.

• Near-miss with stopped school bus

A vehicle narrowly avoided striking a stopped school bus on B40/390th Street on Nov. 12 at 4:16 p.m.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Cody Patrick Bucher, 28, of Paullina, failed to reduce speed or come to a stop behind a marked school bus with flashing red lights. A child was exiting the bus from 390th Street onto Pierce Avenue, where a parent was waiting in another vehicle. Bucher saw the bus at the last moment and drove his 1989 Pontiac Lemans Aerocoupe into the south ditch and narrowly missed the bus. Bucher stated that he was exhausted and had been up for over 24 hours.

No injuries were reported. Damage to Bucher’s vehicle was listed at $500. He was cited for Unlawful Passing of School Bus-1st Offense, Failure to Maintain Control and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability-Accident.

• Vehicle strikes deer

A 2018 Ford cargo van driven by Mark William Rogers, 32, of Schaller, struck a deer on L36/Nettle Avenue on Nov. 12 at 8:25 p.m. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, damage to the van was estimated at $2,139.
