A tough road for the Hawks

H-M-S loses 3 matches to end regular season

Three road trips last week did not end with any wins for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team. The Hawks closed out the regular season with a record of 5-15 overall and 1-9 in War Eagle Conference play.

• vs. Hinton

In a rescheduled contest on Oct. 12, the Hawks were defeated by Hinton, 3-1. After getting off to a slow start in the first set (10-25) and falling short in the second (23-25), H-M-S broke through for a win in the third set (25-18). The Hawks could not sustain the momentum and lost the final set (14-25).

Jasmine Lux led the offense with nine kills, Olivia Grooters was close behind with seven and Darby Mastbergen added three. Taya Mason contributed 17 set assists.

The Hawks had one of their best serving nights with an efficiency of .945. Individually, Abby Kunzman was 14-of-14; Jessica Riedemann was 12-of-12 with a team-high three aces; Kaley Pearson and Mason were 9-of-9; Mastbergen was 9-of-10; and Grace Dalen was 15-of-18 with two aces.


Riedemann led the defense with 20 digs, followed by Mason and Mastbergen with 12 each, Elise Haack and Ava Reitsma with seven, Lux with six and Dalen with four. Lux and Reitsma also had two block assists.

• vs. MMCRU

The Hawks traveled to Marcus on Oct. 13 for a matchup with MMCRU. They were swept by scores of 12-25, 22-25, 8-25.

In the competitive second set, H-M-S led by as many as four points before giving up the lead at 16-17. The Royals pulled away to an 18-24 advantage before the Hawks fought back to get back to within 22-24. A kill by MMCRU settled the outcome.


Serving leaders were Riedemann, 10-of-10; Pearson, 7-of-7; Mason, 8-of-9; and Kunzman and Mastbergen, 3-of-3.

Mastbergen led the back row defense with 10 digs, Riedemann had nine and Haack added five. H-M-S recorded 15 blocks overall, including a solo and three assists by Lux; three assists by Grooters; a solo and two assists by Reitsma; and two assists by Mason.

The Hawks only had seven kills, led by Lux with four and Reitsma with two. Mason put up six set assists.

• vs. Akron-Westfield

H-M-S finished out the week on Oct. 15 at Akron, where Akron-Westfield swept the Hawks by scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-15.

The Hawks had another good serving night, being successful on 94 percent of their 49 attempts. Dalen was 13-of-14 with three aces; Riedemann was 10-of-10; Pearson was 9-of-9 with an ace; Mason was 8-of-9 with three aces; and Mastbergen was 3-of-3.

On defense, leaders in digs were Mastbergen and Riedemann with seven, Mason with six, Pearson with five, and Dalen and Reitsma with three each. Lux and Grooters each contributed two block assists.

Lux also led H-M-S with seven kills while Reitsma had four and Grooters had three. Mason recorded 11 set assists.
