• Two arrested on warrants

On Oct. 10, a deputy with the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office located a vehicle that he knew was associated with two subjects that had active arrest warrants. The sheriff’s office set up a surveillance operation and was assisted by officers from the Iowa Great Lakes Task Force, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.

Arrested in the suspect’s vehicle was Bradley Tyler Kots, 24, of Sutherland. Kots was arrested for an outstanding warrant from Cherokee County for Theft 1st Degree (Vehicle Theft) and Operating Without Owner’s Consent.

Arrested in a motel room at the Holiday Inn Express in Sheldon was Ashley Elaine Call, 33, of Spencer. Call was arrested for outstanding warrants from Clay County for Probation Violations.

The sheriff’s office obtained two search warrants, one for the room at the Holiday Inn Express and one for the suspect vehicle. The warrant for the motel room resulted in a seizure of over 32 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and cash. The vehicle search resulted in seizure of drug paraphernalia and clothing.

Kots’ arrest stems from the fact that he is suspected in numerous vehicle thefts that occurred in northwest Iowa. The thefts are still under investigation and criminal charges are pending the outcome of those investigations.

• Arrested on drug and assault charges

An investigation into a domestic abuse complaint in Paullina concluded with the arrest of a Paullina man on a variety of charges.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies made contact with David Stanley, 57, of Paullina, on Oct. 13 at 3:20 p.m., as he was standing in the doorway of a Paullina residence. Stanley told officers he would rather talk with them across the street at a convenience store. Having been informed that Stanley was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine, deputies investigated and found two suspected meth pipes and two baggies of a substance identified as methamphetamine between the screen door and entry door of the home where contact was first made.

Stanley was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, 3rd or subsequent offense, which is a class D felony. He also was charged with Carrying Weapons, a misdemeanor, after discovery of a pair of knives with blades of more than 5 inches. According to the sheriff’s office, Stanley did not have a permit to carry weapons, which is required in order to carry knives of that size. He was also charged with Domestic Assault, also a misdemeanor.

Stanley was taken to the O’Brien County jail. He was released on Oct. 14.

• Five fire departments respond to call

Five O’Brien County fire departments responded to a structure fire that occurred near Sutherland on Sunday, Oct. 11.

The report states the Sutherland Fire Department was paged to 6350 440th Street, northwest of Sutherland, where a hog nursery building and a tool shed were engulfed in flames. Due to strong winds, the fire was spreading north into a grove. Responding to a call for mutual aid were fire departments from Calumet, Hartley, Primghar and Paullina.

As many as four pumpers were used. Six farmers disking end rows of a nearby field of standing corn helped prevent the fire from reaching the field. B&R Excavating dug a hole next to the nursery and pushed it in along with some burning trees and covered it with dirt.

No injuries were reported. The two buildings and the tools and equipment in them were destroyed. An electrical issue is the suspected cause of the fire.
