No wins for H-M-S in home volleyball invite

Wins were hard to come by for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its home volleyball tournament on Saturday. The Hawks were swept in pool play by Okoboji (14-21, 12-21), Gehlen Catholic (5-21, 8-21) and Sioux City West (13-21, 21-23).

For the tournament, Jasmine Lux and Ava Reitsma led H-M-S with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Jessica Riedemann put down five kills and Olivia Grooters had four.

Darby Mastbergen recorded 20 set assists for the three matches and Kaley Pearson added 10.

On defense, Abby Kunzman led H-M-S with 17 digs while Pearson had 15, Lux had 10, Riedemann had nine and Mastbergen had seven.

Serving leaders for the day were Kunzman, 18-19; Pearson, 14-15 with an ace; Mastbergen and Riedemann, 9-of-10 with two aces.

Team results in Pool A were Gehlen Catholic, 3-0; Okoboji, 2-1; Sioux City West, 1-2; and H-M-S, 0-3. Newell-Fonda was 3-0 to win Pool B, while South O'Brien was 2-1, Rock Valley was 1-2 and Trinity Christian was 0-3.

In the semi-final round, Gehlen Catholic (1A No. 8) swept South O'Brien while Newell-Fonda was a 2-0 winner over Okoboji. Gehlen Catholic then swept Newell-Fonda to win the tournament title.

The Hawks' match on Monday at Hinton was postponed. The next scheduled matches for H-M-S (4-10, 0-4) are with South O'Brien on Oct. 1 and Harris-Lake Park on Oct. 6, both in Hartley.
