The water tower was scheduled for cleaning and touch-ups this year, but the work was put on hold to decide a new design.

Council members on Sept. 14 agreed to move forward with a design that features the city's name in black writing over top of the familiar red heart logo. That's similar to the tower's current appearance, but the hope is to make the lettering stand out more.

"The font [on the new design] is a lot easier to read," said Council Member Ron Hengeveld.

Council Member Jerry Olson earlier this year sparked debate about the current tower's design. He believes the current cursive font is too thin and cluttered to decipher from afar, and proposed a redo.

The water tower's design was painted in 2010. It was due for cleaning and touchups this year, but that work was postponed to 2021 to accommodate the changes. Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz said previously the changes would cost a minimum of $6,000.
