• Arrested on burglary, drug charges

A Hartley man faces felony burglary and drug charges and a misdemeanor theft charge following a break-in at a Sutherland business.

Joe Collins, 42, is accused of breaking into JTV Manufacturing in Sutherland, where over $1,000 in cash and change was removed. Images recorded by security cameras prompted law enforcement to seek a search warrant for a residential address in Sutherland. Officers found evidence that allegedly ties Collins to the burglary. After discovering methamphetamine at the residence, officers applied for a second search warrant for the narcotics.

The report states that Collins was taken to the O’Brien County jail where he was charged with Burglary 3rd Degree, a class D felony; Theft 3rd Degree, an aggravated misdemeanor; and two counts of Possession of Methamphetamine, which are class D felonies. Collins was later released on bond.

• Suspicious fire in Primghar

A fire in Primghar on Aug. 2 is under investigation due to the nature of how it started.

House debris was reported on fire at a residence at 240th Fourth Street Northeast. According to authorities, the house had been pushed over into the basement. The debris was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. After attempting to extinguish the blaze, firemen allowed the debris to burn. Nearby structures were protected.

Firemen were on the scene for approximately four hours. The Sanborn Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The cause of the fire has been described as “suspicious,” as power to the location was disconnected and there was no lightning in the area. The state fire marshal’s office is not investigating the incident since there were no extenuating circumstances and no insurance claim. However, the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation.

• DNR makes arrest in boating hit and run on West Lake Okoboji

On Aug. 6, DNR conservation officers located a damaged boat consistent with damage to the hit and run incident, which seriously injured Vaughn Wickham, of Spirit Lake, on Aug. 4.

The boat was located in a hoist at a private residence on the north end of West Lake Okoboji. Conservation officers obtained a search warrant and seized a 2010 28-foot Boston Whaler. Shortly after seizing the boat, Zachery Kruse, 20, of Spirit Lake, turned himself in to DNR conservation officers and admitted to operating the boat involved in the hit and run.

Kruse was booked into the Dickinson County Jail and charged with an aggravated misdemeanor for failing to give aid in a vessel resulting in a serious injury.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Bureau was assisted by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and numerous helpful citizens in the investigation.
