1945: Partial eclipse darkens area skies

• July 12, 1945

Those who could stir themselves at that hour saw the eclipse of the sun in Hartley. At a few minutes after six the moon started its downward course across the sun. The eclipse was about 77 percent complete. It was the first time since 1932 that one been seen here.

The Hartley light plant boasted of being the official United States weather station for this section. Weather instruments reporting both temperature and moisture had been installed.

Once again Hartley demonstrated to its fighting men that it was backing them 100 percent. Complete figures for the 7th War Loan drive showed that Hartley residents had exceeded the sales quota far above expectations. The Series “E” bond sales were particularly gratifying. The grand total of the bond drive was $152,347.50.

• July 9, 1970

Hartley’s first condominium, or townhouse, was rapidly taking shape on the site where the Methodist church formerly stood. Similar units were to be located just west of those being constructed by Don Hagen, of Primghar.


Lori Schoelerman, of Hartley, was the winner of a stereo player which was the top prize in the mini artist contest held at Zinn Radio and TV. Arlene Houston judged the contest.

A second meeting of concerned youth and adults was scheduled to discuss the youth problems confronting the community and suggestions for the solution to those problems. Members of the steering committee appointed to moderate the meeting were Rev. Bernard Sayler, Mrs. Vearl Edwards, Craig Koele, Tim O’Brien, Darwyn Donnenwerth, Audley DeGraaf and Dr. George Wingerson.


• July 13, 1995

Amber Hasche, of Hartley, was one of 45 youth who boosted their science skills during the Young Scholars in Engineering program at Dordt College in Sioux Center. The program offered science-related activities to qualified students who had completed seventh or eighth grade. It was designed to motivate the participants to consider engineering as a vocational goal.

The American Legion Bingo donated $100 to the Community Memorial Health Center Auxiliary. The funds were to be combined with other donations designated toward the purchase of a whirlpool at the Senior Wellness Center.

A special feature planned during the Hartley Chamber of Commerce’s Ridiculous Days promotion was a donkey baseball game at Fanning Field. Local Chamber members were to participate along with a group from the Sanborn Chamber of Commerce.
