1995: Quotes sought for library expansion

• June 7, 1945

Fifty years to the day, members of the local chapter of the Eastern Star celebrated the anniversary of the founding of Golden Sheaf chapter. Officers of the organization were gowned in costumes of the colonial period.

Construction of the new Foley furniture store building on the corner lot east of the Sentinel plant was to commence as soon as materials arrived. The building was to be one story and constructed of ceramic tile.

Pete’s Café closed its doors until further announcement. Because of OPA regulations, Mr. Christianson found it necessary to make the decision to close. He hoped to be able to reopen in about 30 days.

The window at Thomas Drug Store was attracting a great deal of attention from passersby. The window was filled with souvenirs sent to residents from all parts of the world by their sons and daughters in service.

• June 4, 1970

The male athletes at Hartley Junior High had a successful school year. The seventh and eighth graders won all their football games, seven of eight basketball games and two track events, including the Sioux Valley Conference meet. Their coach was Robert Burt.

Henry Coren, of Omaha, Neb., escaped injury when his car was struck by a Milwaukee train. Coren was driving south on 1st Avenue West when the train backed up going east and struck the vehicle broadside, pushing it down the track 39 feet.

Less than 100 persons in Hartley voted in the primary election, which was possibly the lightest vote cast up to that time.

Hartley Community School’s final state equalization aid payment for the 1969-70 school year totaled $52,721. The six schools in the county received a combined $337,389.

• June 8, 1995

Results of a telephone survey conducted by the Hartley Public Library showed that nearly 60 percent of respondents were aware of the lack of space in the library facility. A similar number indicated willingness to financially support a building or remodeling project. As a step toward accomplishing the goal of a larger library, the city council authorized the board to obtain cost quotations for preliminary architectural services.

Hartley city council members wanted residents to decide whether a local option sales and service tax should be implemented in O’Brien County. They voted to approve a resolution requesting that the county board of supervisors place the measure on the ballot. A majority would be needed to approve the additional sales tax. Council Member Doug Hoaglund voted against passage of the resolution.
