Mrs. L.G. Newel, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, announced that gross receipts of the poppy sale totaled $230.83, the largest amount taken in for poppy sales in the history of the organization. Proceeds aided World War I and II veterans and their families.

The new super market for the Council Oak store was going up nicely. The front was being put on and the plate glass windows had been installed. The new Bartelson building, on Highway 18 at the end of Main Street, was also rapidly taking shape.

Mrs. Irene Meier and Mrs. Ardys Krutzfeldt received pictures of their husbands, F1/C Harry Meier and Pfc. Orland Krutzfeldt, which had been taken on Oahu, where they had met. The two men were brothers-in-law, their wives being sisters.

For the first time in O’Brien County, voters would use voting machines to cast their ballots. A demonstration of the use of the machines was held in Hartley in preparation for the upcoming Iowa primary election.

Sixteen building custodians met at Northwest Iowa Vocational School in Sheldon to form a chapter of the Iowa Association of Custodians and Assistants. Robert Butler, of Hartley, was elected vice president of the group.

In addition to covering three traffic accidents, the Hartley Police Department held the annual bicycle inspection. Because of the rainy day only 65 bicycles were inspected and issued a license.

A 40-minute program on home and school safety was presented at the elementary school in Hartley. Major Marlowe presented the program interspersed with magic and comedy.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn students designated as State of Iowa Scholars were Kara Funke, Heather Martinsen, Christopher Ruf, Aimee Seivert and Matthew Trost. Each student received a certificate that was signed by the governor.

The summer recreation programs of Hartley, Melvin, Sanborn and May City each received a total of $400 from the H-M-S Area Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast committee. The funds represented a portion of the proceeds from the mayors’ prayer breakfast held earlier in the year.

The annual Memorial Day program was conducted by American Legion Post #288. Flags in memory of Paul Hunt, Robert “Buck” Mealman, Merle Mulder and Kenneth Mohr were added to the Avenue of Flags. The flags were not put out at the cemetery due to inclement weather during the weekend.
